Fish Species

There is a wide variety of trout species in the White Mountains. Some of the more popular ones are: Apache (Arizona's Native Trout), Rainbow, German Brown, Cutthroat, Brook Trout, and Grayling. Hatcheries in Arizona stock Rainbows and our native Apache trout to provide sustainable populations of each.  Although German Browns are no longer stocked, they continue to be present in most of our lakes and streams.  Previously stocked Cutthroat and Brook Trout exist in smaller numbers. Due to the threat of disease, stocking from out of state hatcheries has been discontinued in Arizona.Fishing in Arizona is governed by either Arizona State Law for state lands, or White Mountain Apache Tribal law. A valid fishing license is required for each, and also some of our more popular trips, require special use permits on the Reservation or rod/access fees on private lands.State licenses or permits can be obtained at various vendors in the White Mountains area.Reservation permits are only available thru the Outdoor shop at Hondah, or at White Mountain Recreation Enterprises in White River.
